What to expect at your first sexual health visit

Published on:

A first visit to a sexual health clinic can feel daunting. Knowing what to expect can make it easier. The team is there to help, not to judge.

Introduction

Sexual health services are free and confidential. You do not have to be a certain age, gender or sexuality to use them. You can ask for a longer chat if you have a lot to talk about.

Some clinics take walk-ins. Others ask you to book. Check how your clinic works before you travel.

At the start

A member of staff will ask for your name and contact details. You can ask to use a different name on your notes. They will ask why you came, and what you would like to do. You can bring a friend with you.

The consultation

  • You talk to a nurse or doctor about your sex life, in private
  • You can ask any question you like
  • You decide what tests you would like
  • If you have symptoms, you may have a short examination

Tests and results

Tests may include a urine sample, a swab and a blood test. Most are quick and not painful. The team tells you how you will get your results, and often this is by text message.

If you are nervous, tell the team. They see people with the same worries every day.
